Our Weekend

This was our first homestead weekend of our challenge. On Saturday we went to a few yard sales, at one of them I found a ton of Christian fiction for me at $.50 a book. I also bought our littlest some toys and a few decorations for my kitchen. My total spent for a box of books, five toys, five country decorations, and a couple dresses for the girls...under $20

We didn't eat out at all on Saturday and hung out the laundry. I haven't been to CVS in two weeks. I was able to find some school books at Goodwill today.

I have gotten into a bad habit of running around. How can I homestead if I'm not home?? When we lived out of town I only went to town one week day and then on Sunday for church, the rest of the time we stayed home. It has gotten so easy to run across town every day for one thing or another. We've quit eating out but instead I'm constantly on the go so we aren't saving much. We are ahead every month but not enough. I want a much simpler lifestyle and always buying bargains at yard sales or thrift stores doesn't help. I look around and see piles of treasures....that I've wasted time and money on...grrrr... Time to start Flylady again!!

Do you have any tips on how to break the on the go habit? Or how to conquer the need for bargains?

Weekly Wrap Up

This week has been pretty frugal. I did have some garden expenses but now I'm done. My total for all the plants was $85.00 - not too bad but I'm not sure it was really frugal. I'm hoping the garden will do really well and I'll save a lot of money.

We still haven't turned our air conditioner on. We also aren't turning on the lights until about nine p.m.

I did do a lot of driving this week but didn't spend very much money. I found a place to buy local organic milk and eggs. I also have gotten back into using the library and have saved well over $200 in the last two weeks by reserving the books I had wanted to buy.

My son and I did some goodwill shopping on Monday-the whole store was 50% off!! I found five new American Eagle shirts, a skirt, a Christmas dress, Reagan's 4th of July dress, and five books and I spent $16.00.

We didn't eat out all week. I haven't done too great sticking to my menu but at least we didn't eat out!!

I hung all our laundry out on the line. We're down to one trashcan a week for a family of seven- I'd love to reduce it even more...the price of trash is getting crazy.

We have started having some of our bills paid directly out of our checking account saving time and money.

I'm hoping that since I've started our homestead challenge that it will help us save even more money since I won't be chasing all the deals and we're emptying our freezer. We will be using our huge stockpile and our freezer full of meat to keep our grocery bill down. The only items I still need to purchase are diapers and wipes, everything else I have almost one year's worth stockpiled.

Tired...

Today was another busy day. We finally finished our garden. In our shared garden with our neighbors we have 1- 30 foot row of green beans, 2 - 30 foot rows of Yukon gold potatoes, a row of tomatoes, and 3 pepper plants and two broccoli plants. In our flower bed garden we have 8 tomato plants, 12 pepper plants, 6 cucumber plants, 10 onions, and 9 strawberry plants. My son, dad, and I also dug up three new garden spots that have 20 strawberry plants, 4 zucchini, and 2 squash plants. I also planted our new raspberry and blueberry plants.

It feels great to finally have our garden finished.

My son has been begging to write a post on here and today is the day for his post since he was so helpful today. Here is my son's post-

First of all it seemed to take forever about 5 hours but it wasn't surprisingly. I was in charge of digging the holes etc. Well that took a LONG time to do that because the ground around our house is very hard. We have a bunch of I think they were raspberry and blueberry. We have a pool with a hole in it and we were planning to plant the blueberry bush but there was a bunch of snake and spider eggs and stuff so bye bye to that idea so we just decided to plant it along the side of our house the left side because the right side was filled up. I was getting these logs out of the way because otherwise we could not have planted me and my mom took shifts and we got that done. I really can't wait for the blueberries to get ready.

I was happy because I got a bunch of chocolate chip cookies because I did the garden stuff with her without whining.

It's a Dirty Job...

Today is the third day of our homestead challenge. I don't think I have ever been this dirty. We spent the first half of the day hanging laundry, weeding the garden (for two hours!!), and my son pushed mowed our yard ( for two hours!!). After a quick lunch of sandwiches we headed out to the greenhouse and Kroger's.

We finally finished buying for our garden- at least until I find something else to plant!! The greenhouse had some of their plants marked down...I bought another 20 strawberry plants for a song. My girls also talked me into another red raspberry bush and a blueberry bush. I finally remembered to buy seed potatoes. Last year we planted red potatoes this year we'll be planting Yukon gold.

Once we got home it was time to get dirty-again. I found the "perfect" place for half of my strawberry plants. A place overrun with weeds, a total eye sore. However, once I pulled all those weeds and starting digging I realized this wasn't going to be an easy job... under the weeds and dirt was tons of rocks!! I thought it would take a half hour.... um two hours later and one dirty mommy plus a really dirty one year old and we had 11 strawberry plants in the ground.

I knew homesteading wasn't going to be easy... I am thanking God that I have some meals in the freezer because the last thing I want to do is cook!!!

Homestead Challenge Day 2

Today we headed to our library and signed up for the summer reading program. They are having some awesome programs and we should be enjoying free fun for the whole month of June!! While we were in town we stopped at our local organic store and I decided to buy some local organic milk to see if the kids liked it...success! so now I have a place to buy local milk. We also stopped at the green house and bought 4 huge pepper plants!!

I hung our laundry out today and we ate the leftover spaghetti for lunch. The kids had horseback riding lessons tonight so I quickly put some cooked chicken and cream of chicken soup in the crock pot for shredded chicken sandwiches.

I'm feeling pretty good about what I've accomplished so far. The only thing I wish I could do is have some chickens for fresh eggs. I love that I am finding other places to buy our groceries. I don't need the grocery store now for eggs or milk and once our garden is producing I'll be using that instead of the store. Our local farmer's market is just getting started also so I'll be able to use that to get more produce. My next step is to find local meat and cheeses.

I currently have a very large stockpile of cleaners, toilet paper, and shampoo so I won't be making any cleaning supplies until I use up what we have. If I am successful with buying local or growing my own I will be going a long while without going to the store.

My other new find was a food co-op that sounds pretty awesome. I'll be getting a catalog next week. I'm hoping the savings will be worth it.

Summer Reading Programs

One of the ways I have found to keep our book budget down is to enroll my children in all the summer reading programs we can. Half Price Books offers $3 gift cards for each week you read 15 minutes a day. If you do the entire program from June 1- July 31 that adds up quick! We also use Barnes and Noble where they can earn two free books each. We have three libraries around us and we sign up for each program, some offer new books, others food coupons.

This year I'm also hosting our own summer reading program and will be offering WebKinz for each 15 books read or a limit of two webkinz a month or they can choose a cash prize!! I'm hoping this will help my struggling reader. My book lover will be reading off our summer reading list.

Summer reading programs save money and are a way to keep their brains from going to mush!

I wanna be a homesteader Challenge Day 1

Today was the first day of my homestead challenge. I didn't get a lot of homestead type things done today. I did wash our laundry in cold water and hung it out on the line. We haven't turned our air conditioner on and probably won't until July. Our lights have been off all day and we didn't turn on the ceiling fan until after lunch.

My girls picked four strawberries from our plants. We did a little weeding and watered our plants. We had hoped to finish the garden planting today but my dad didn't make it over. I still need to dig up two spots for our zucchini and more strawberries. I think I'll also plant another raspberry plant.
Next week we'll head to our local orchard to pick tons of strawberries to eat, make jam, and freeze for later.

We had friends over for a play date and all the kids played soccer and then we went to a park just five minutes away. We admired the flowers and caught a tadpole who we now have in a jar on our counter!!

We ate up all our left overs and I made spaghetti for dinner so I didn't heat up the kitchen. I'm researching some crock pot recipes to help keep the heat down.

I'm also planning on having a yard sale soon so I'm focusing on decluttering- I have a bad habit of holding on to things just in case I'll need them again. I find it especially difficult to get rid of our baby things. I would love to have more babies but I don't think my health could handle it.

I also assigned new chores to the kids. I'm hoping to get them trained on their new chores during June. We also have been recycling everything thing we can. I also found a place for compost in the yard.

I'm pretty content with our "urban homestead" once our gardens are producing we won't need to visit the store. The only thing I wish I could do is have a couple chickens in the backyard! I would love to raise our meat too but in a year or so my parents should be at their farm and maybe I'll to raise some at their place. I would love to not use the grocery store!!

Weekly Shopping Trip

My son and I went for our weekly groceries last night. It was great the stores were empty so we could look for the best deals. My goal was to stay under $50. Do you think we did it?

Walmart-
2 gallons distilled water
Syrup
2 boxes Kashi Waffles ( .29 each!!)
Keebler Cookies ( for hubby)

Kroger
3lb organic apples
2lb organic strawberries
2lb nitrate free hot dogs ( Yea!! For Oscar Meyer...no more traveling to Trader Joe's for hot dogs!)
1 6 pack of organic yogurt ( used free coupon!)
1 4 pack of organic soda
Chips A-hoy ( for hubby)
Edward's pie single ( for hubby)
2 bags of potato chips ( I can't make these!!)
1 loaf of bread ( free coupon)
1 package of hot dog buns ( I haven't been successful at hot dog buns...any tips??)

Total for both stores $39.85

** We didn't buy any meat this week because my husband wants us to eat down our deep freezer stockpile to defrost. I had to pass up some cheap chicken that was marked down...that was hard!! We also have a huge stockpile of free frozen vegetables. I also keep at least 10lb of sugar and flour on hand for baking at all times. I also didn't plan on buying the Kashi waffles but Meijer had them on sale for $2.29 so I priced matched that at Walmart and used my $2 off coupons from the Kashi coupon book found at Krogers. ***

Challenges!!

My husband has informed me that we need to defrost our deep freeze which means... gulp!! we have to eat down my stockpile of frozen foods!!! That will be a challenge all in itself but I also decided to add another challenge I have been wanting to try...

I've always dreamed of being a homesteader. I want the farm, the livestock, the garden, to bake everything from scratch, and not have to rely on grocery stores or Walmart to save the day. Unfortunately we live in town and in a rental so I'm limited to what I can do. I do have a large garden and am going to expand it even more, hoping to grow most of our produce this summer. I can't have chickens or livestock but I have found a local Mennonite store that sells farm fresh eggs so I'll buy them there. However, there are many homestead things I can do. I can stop relying on convenience foods from the store... including cereal, rice mixes, cookie mixes, etc. I can stop running to Walmart or Kroger for every deal under the sun and only buy what we need. I have a large stockpile of food and household needs so I could go a long time only buying milk, eggs, flour, and produce. I can hang all my laundry on my clothesline. I can bake all our breads and snacks from scratch. I can use it up, make do, or do without!!

Welcome to my I Wanna Be a Homesteader Challenge!! I will post every day all the things I have done in my challenge to be an Urban Homesteader. I hope it will help reduce our spending even further and help make our dreams of our homestead in the country to come true.

As we embark on this challenge I will be using up our convenience foods and eating from our deep freeze so I'll still have certain things on my menu. If you see cereal on the plan it won't be from the store but our stockpile. As I run out of thing like cleaning supplies or soap I'll be making them from "scratch". I'm also hoping to reduce our running around from store to store. We will still visit our library, church, and play with friends but I'm hoping we can all start finding contentment at staying home.

Will you join me in my I Wanna Be a Homesteader Challenge? Our first day will be tomorrow and will go through July 1

Summer Reading Programs

Are you looking for summer reading programs for your kids this summer? If so, check out Half Price Books program. Your child can earn a $3 gift card per week for reading 15 minutes a day. We used this program last year and my two children earned $60 in gift cards. This is a great way to stretch your book budget and your homeschool budget!!

We also use our Library reading program and Barnes and Noble. At Barnes and Noble your children can earn two new books!!

We use the reading programs to add to our home library and for credit in our home school year.

The Awwww Factor

Yesterday was my baby's first birthday party, and some of my other blessing were not in the best of moods- especially my ten year old who thinks he's 16. What a difference a day makes.

Right now my " too cool for birthday parties" son is playing with our one year old and her new toys. He really is a great big brother and son.... I just need to keep reminding myself of this for the next 8 years!! LOL!!

Christmas Shopping Already?

One of the ways we have found to save money is to Christmas shop year round. I'm always checking the clearance racks and yard sales or Once Upon A Child for great deals. Our goal for our Christmas budget is $200 for all five children. If I shop really creatively we are able to stay in our budget. However, I can't wait until December to do our shopping!!

I used to be a die hard day after Thanksgiving shopper. Last year though I found Amazon and I got some awesome deals! I have changed my tune, now when the kids ask for something I always check Amazon to see what their going rate is so I can compare to other stores, usually amazon is cheaper because I can get free shipping and not have to pay sales tax. It also gives me a good idea of what prices should be for used toys.

I have already bought three really nice gifts and only spent less than $20 total and the gifts are originally over $50 each!! I keep them in the Amazon boxes until I wrap them so the kids can't peek. I also have a box where I keep gifts that I buy throughout the year with my extra care bucks or register rewards.

My goal this year is to pay for our Christmas with Swagbuck gift cards and my Extra Care Bucks or Register Rewards.

Using the Clothesline

When we moved to the country I heard how expensive the electricity was so one of my first goals was to use the least amount of energy possible. I started using a clothes line right away. I hung every load of wash and kept our electric bill about $40 a month. Fast forward a few years and add two more children and I have found a love of hanging laundry again.

I love that my oldest daughter will help me and share her dreams while hanging clothes. I love that my one year old is playing at my feet and "helping" get the clothes out of the basket. I love the smell of clothes that have been drying on the line.

I have found that drying clothes on the line for a family of seven requires that I do one load of laundry a day. It takes me about 10 minutes to hang one load of laundry. I love that it gives me a few moments to enjoy God's creation.

Hanging our laundry works for me! For more works for me ideas check out we are that family

Garden Update

Today the kids and I went to visit our local greenhouse. We came back $36.00 poorer. However, they had such a great time picking different plants. We have planted 8 strawberry plants. We still need to plant squash, zucchini, 3 more cucumbers, broccoli, and green beans. I forgot to buy my seed potatoes so I still need to get those. We also bought a red raspberry bush to plant by our back porch. The girls also picked out a butterfly rose flower and some geraniums.

My seven year old says as we're digging yet another hole for a plant " you know, once all this is growing we won't even need to buy groceries!!"

My total amount spent for the garden is $47.00

I'm hoping I'll be able to get a couple more pepper plants still.

Racing for the Cure

On Saturday my mom and my youngest child spent the morning with over 45,000 people in downtown Columbus racing to cure breast cancer. Each year since my diagnosis my mom, and my aunts, and cousins have gone to the race. It is so powerful to see how many people want to end this disease. It is also devastating to see how many lives are being affected by breast cancer. Ohio is ranked 4th in the nation in breast cancer deaths. 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. Please help us find a cure!!

Menu Plan Monday

Here is what I'm hoping to cook for my family this week.

How Does Your Garden Grow

Our garden is almost all planted. We've planted 14 onions, lettuce, 4 tomato plants, 6 cucumber plants, and six pepper plants. We still have the following to plant-
-4 grape tomato plants
-6 pepper plants or more
-potatoes
- 2 cucumber plants
-the kids want to grow melons so we'll plant a couple
-squash
-zucchini

I'd love to not have to do much grocery shopping once the garden is producing!!

Extreme Saving!!

Okay folks, it's time for us to get really really serious about not spending our money! We have decided to take a trip to Myrtle Beach in September, it's our first vacation in five years!!! and we want to be able to have fun!

This time around we're going to have to get a bigger condo to stay in since we've added two children since the last time!! We're going with my parents so we'll be able to save some money by splitting the cost. We'll also plan on cooking most days at the condo so we'll save that way too.

So, starting now we're on a spending freeze until we save the amount of money that we want to have for the trip.

Do you have any money saving tips for me?

Kraft Coupon at Kroger

I found a tear pad of Kraft coupons that are $2 off your beef or chicken purchase when you buy specific Kraft products, BBQ sauce, A-1 steak sauce and marinade, Miracle whip, and others. You can combine this with the high dollar Kraft coupons from coupons.com or the $2 off A-1 from last Sundays paper for free or cheap marinade and cheap meat.

The tear pad was found at the BBQ sauce/ wheat thin display by the yogurt/pop area.

Shopping Helpers

I am always trying to find time to spend one on one with each of my children. It can get difficult because they share bedrooms and we're always together. I was searching trying to find another way to carve out some solo time, when I realized that I could give up "my " time when I go grocery shopping. I go grocery shopping at least once a week so we alternate which child gets to go. I try to make it fun and the one who goes gets to pick out an extra snack and a lunch choice. When my son comes with me we make a stop at the movie rental store and he gets to pick out a game.

I also have made a special point in taking just the girls out on Saturday for yard sales and thrift store shopping. It gives us time to laugh and play. I hope that it will also become a tradition that they will look forward to.

Real Mom's Guide to OAMC

I love the convenience of freezer cooking. I love the fact that I don't have to think about what we'll eat for dinner every single day. What I don't love however, is the time and the expense it takes to make 30 meals. Here are some ways I've made this more home school mom of many young ones user friendly.

My first task is to sit down and decide what I'd like to make for dinner for the next month or two. After I decide what I want to make I write down every single ingredient for all my recipes and then I "shop" our freezers and pantry. Once I know what I need I make our final grocery and meal list.

I prefer the thaw and dump method of freezer cooking, which is basically putting your meat in a bag and adding marinade or other sauces to then freeze. I found that for me with five young children it wasn't possible for me to cook all 30 different meals like many cookbooks recommend. I would spend the day frustrated and angry with my children and then I wouldn't want to even think about eating those meals that took so long to make!! So, I continued along trying various different ways to save time, money, and effort by freezer cooking when I stumbled upon a recipe that was so simple I couldn't believe I hadn't thought of it! Just add raw meat and a variety of spices, juices, and other ingredients, freeze and when ready to eat, thaw it out and pour into a pan!! WOW! I had time to fit that into my schedule. My oldest can even make some of the meals this way! What a time saver. I just line up three freezer bags, have a child hold each one, while I add the ingredients to each bag. In less than five minutes I can put three meals into the freezer.

Another way I find time to cut the time of freezer cooking is by doing an all hamburger day. I will buy 5-10lb of raw hamburger, right away I'll start cooking at least 5lb on the stove. While that is cooking my oldest is mixing up a meatloaf to freeze in it's raw state. I'll mix up a batch of meatballs during this time too. In about one hour we can put up 10lb of hamburger.

I also cook huge batches of chicken in the crock pot and then shred the meat and freeze in about two cup servings. I use that in chicken noodle soup, shredded chicken sandwiches, enchiladas, and anything else that calls for cooked chicken.

Having ground beef and chicken pre-cooked and in the freezer is a huge time saver. You can put together tacos or chili or sloppy joes in less than 5 minutes!

I only spend about 3 hours a month putting meals away for the freezer. I just don't have time to spend all day in the kitchen at this point in my life. I talked a lot about my oldest helping me, he just turned 10 and has been helping me for over a year. He is finally at the point where he can put his own meals kits together with no help from me. I count this as home economics for him.

I find this works really well if your husband isn't a fan of casseroles or meals that have been completely cooked and then are being reheated. It is also a wonderful way to save money and very healthy. I haven't used any that need cream soups or other premade items like that. Most of my recipes are olive oil, lemon or lime juice, vinegars, and seasonings. It is very healthy if you avoid artificial chemicals in your food or are on a restricted diet like we are. You can also pick up most of your main ingredients in one large once a month shopping trip. I personally, buy a huge amount of boneless chicken tenders/breasts when they are less than $1.99lb and make all my chicken recipes for a month or more that way you know your meals are the most cost efficient.

Goal Updates

This is the first year that my husband and I have made any financial goals, I have to say having goals has really helped us focus on saving money.

One of our yearly goals was to reduce eating out and quit eating out for one month. We met this goal when we decided as a family to give up eating out for Lent this year. After going six weeks without eating out we have found it is easy to pass up the drive through. We have eaten out twice in the last week but that was due to me being side lined by the flu. I have become better at planning our dinner meals and keeping quick meals on hand for days I don't feel like cooking. I am still struggling with our lunch menu though, so that is one of my new goals.

We are also trying to have four no spend months. We have done two so far. Our first month went really well. I found during our second month it was easier to cheat on our spending freeze. I have however not been spending much at all of our "household budget" thanks to our large stockpile of cleaning supplies, toilet paper, and diapers/wipes. My overall household budget is down to $10 a month from $200 a month last year at this time.

I did manage to follow a loose schedule for our last month of school and it went much smoother. One of my summer goals to really put forth an effort in training our children to follow a "general" schedule. I know that I will need to plan for our upcoming school year since I will have two little ones not yet in school that will need activities to keep them busy.

We have been able to start saving money for the first time in our marriage, up until this point we ( or rather I) spent most of what we made, however we haven't done as well as we should. I am struggling with our gas for our van budget. It seems no matter what we go over our budget. A simple answer is to not drive anywhere however we have many night time activities that seem to happen every day. Soccer is over though in two weeks and our church drama is over on Sunday and Scouts will be done soon also. Once our nightly running is over I plan on only leaving the house on Wednesday. It will become grocery/errand day and we also have our midweek church service that day. I will also have a thrift day/yard sale day as a special outing for the girls and I.

How are you doing at keeping your yearly goals?

Kroger Deal

Does your family like Cheese Puffs? Mine does! We avoid artificial colors in our home and normal cheese-puffs are filled with Yellow dye #5. Cheetos does offer a natural variety for $3.50 a bag.

**Kroger in Mount Vernon currently has a version of natural cheese curls on sale for $1.25 a bag. It is a huge bag and declared delicious by the kids. I believe it's called Micheal's Seasoning All natural cheese curls. You can find the bags of cheese curls in the produce section.

Sorry for not posting

I apologize for not having my Kroger and CVS deals up this week. I had the flu which I shared with our one year old. She is not having much fun and just wants to be held. I need to get the house back into shape after being "kid cleaned" for a week. Hopefully, the baby will be feeling better tomorrow and I'll be able to get back to posting.

On a side note....tonight is our church's opening night for the children's drama GPS God's Plan for Salvation...stay tuned for some pictures of my son's first production!!!

Do you want to know what one of the most difficult things to do in your life is? Tell your husband, parents, and children that you have cancer. Watching their faces fill with fear and sadness.

I had to do all of these things when I was 25 years old. I was diagnosed with advanced stage invasive ductal carcinoma and HER2+++, I was also pregnant. I had no family history of the disease. I was under the impression that breast cancer only happened to women who were "going through the change" so when I found a lump I said nothing. I brushed it off. When it started to grow and I could barely keep my eyes open from being so tired I chalked it up to pregnancy hormones. Once the tumor was the size of a softball ( DO NOT WAIT THAT LONG!) I finally told my ob/gyn about it. His exact words were " if this is cancer it's too late. It will have already spread every where. "

This July it will be four years since the day the world stood still. I am still alive. I am cancer free. Praise the Lord!!

Each year 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. This disease doesn't care if you're young or old. Black, white, or purple. Mom, daughter, sister, wife, or friend. It wants your life. Susan G Komen is committed to ending this disease. On May 16,2009 Columbus, Ohio will be holding it's annual Race for the Cure- please donate to this worthy cause or go to a race. You will be in awe of the waves of pink survivor shirts. It is a moving experience, one that I've yet to allow my husband or children be part of. My first race was only two months after my mastectomy and three months after my final chemo, at one point I was walking behind a father and his two young children and I noticed who they were walking for - in memory of their mommy- together we can find a cure so that will never be my husband or yours.

Weekly Wrap Up

It's finally Friday!! Time to share all the frugal things we did this week with Jennifer.

I have been sick this week so it's been a very frugal week for us.
* stayed home four days
* finally caved and went to the doctors today and while waiting for my antibiotics to be filled bought minimum groceries mostly just fruit, vegetables, juice, and milk $46
* only did 2 loads of laundry this week
* used the crock pot or ate leftovers or something the kids can cook for dinner
* Since I still don't feel 100% I will be staying home instead of going to community yard sales tomorrow- saving money by not buying anything!!
