In our home one of the ways we have chosen to save money is by picking a certain date to turn on our air conditioner or our furnace. For example, we try not to turn on the heat until November... now that doesn't always work but it does get us through the chilly days by knowing if we last another couple days we can turn on the furnace. We also pick a date to shut it off by. In our home we aim to stop using the furnace by mid-April.
We do the same thing for our air conditioner. We do not turn it on until mid July and we stop Sept. 1 unless there is a crazy heat wave or extremely high humidity. It also helps simplify our days because when it's really warm we just read books or play in the sprinkler.
