What I've Learned so Far

Having gas in your car is a gift. It shouldn't be taken for granted. Also, you can live without running around all the time. However, it is a hard adjustment when you're used to going to friends homes a couple times a week.
** my solution so far is to barter some of my stockpile or baked goods in exchange for a couple gallons of gas **

Cooking at home because you have to gets old.
** my solution- find several meals that are easy to make and always keep those ingredients on hand. I keep pasta and mac and cheese on hand all the time. Hot dogs are a top choice among my kids. If all else fails I make pancakes and eggs.

I don't need as much as I thought --BUT I want things more than I realized.
* I love to look at decorating blogs but I am realizing how discontent it makes me. I love going to thrift stores to hunt for treasures but right now it's NOT in the budget. I'm thinking about organizing a swap meet for a group of friends. No money can change hands but we can bring our unloved items and share!!

I'm getting much more done.
* I cannot run around--there's no money for it. I'm forced to stay home and actually teach my kids, clean my house, and cook!

My parents were self-employed and my husband was self-employed before we were married, and still is self-employed. So, I know where you're coming from. People are always asking me how I have time to get things done. The simple answer is--I'm at HOME, not running around. It makes things much easier.

I've learned bills first, food last. That's how it works for us.

I have been involved in some clothing swaps; it has been a great blessing for us. I also accept all hand-me downs. Even bigger boys sometimes have clothes that they no longer need. I also make over clothing.

The Nester had a decorating swap and I thought that was awesome; you could have a swap party like that!

I used Curriculum Share to get a used math book for my oldest recently as well (I just had to pay shipping).

As far as friends--invite them over!

Cooking at home is normal for me. Going out to eat is not.

I make lots of food for our family of 8 and I make leftovers whenever I can to make things easier. I cook beans in big batches as well. Last year we ate for .70 per person per day.

Keep bartering! I consider bartered eggs a great blessing.
