Real Food Challenge: Week 1 Recap

I joined the Real Food Challenge going on for the month of February over at the Nourished Kitchen. I thought it would be easy since I make most things from scratch. Wrong... our first assignment was to clean out our pantry. To toss anything in a box. All white sugar.
It was crazy! It was hard! It was eye opening!

I was shocked at what I thought was healthy food but it isn't. I tried to throw away everything but rice and my home canned goods but I'll be honest, there's still some organic mac and cheese and two boxes of cereal. Oh and four boxes of organic gravy...I'll toss those this week.

I'm excited about learning how to soak our grains. I am worried about how the family will react. I think this challenge would be much easier if I didn't have a family who was used to eating a typical American diet. I am optimistic that I will learn the proper way to feed our family. I am also going to really try to do all the assignments this coming week. I had a horrible cold and just didn't feel like doing it all.

I do think I did something right though. I had my oldest a sixth grader watch Food Inc tonight for a home school assignment. I needed somebody else on my side!!!

Sounds like you had a fun week! I totally hear you about needing someone on your side -- my mom is still treating me like I'm being "difficult" when I visit her on the weekends, even though I've virtually eliminated my migraines eating traditionally.

Good luck for the rest of the month!

I've been moving my family towards this for quite sometime. I've found that 'tweaking' their favorites is a good way to start. Starting with things they wouldn't even notice - like using butter instead of margarine, or adding liver to the chili that can't be tasted at all. They will adjust, just give them time!

Personally, I don't think you have to fully do every part of the challenge to succeed at the challenge. Every improvement counts!

My kids (teens) watched Food Inc too. And the oldest is reading Animal, Vegetable, Miracle. It helps when they "get" why you're making the changes.

I had to keep rice and some pasta, too. They are family favorites!
