What to do about milk?

I've said that we do one big grocery trip a month and I've been asked what we do for milk, eggs, and produce. Here's how it works for us... We drink raw milk and I travel each week to a farm and buy between 5 and 6 gallons and 2 dozen fresh eggs.

For produce we try to eat in season, during the spring and summer we eat out of our garden. We planted strawberries, red raspberries, and blue berries last summer so we'll be enjoying those fresh this year. We also eat veggies from our garden all summer. During the winter I buy apples, grapes, bananas, and oranges. I buy between 15-20lbs of apples, several bunches of bananas, many pounds of grapes, and probably 10 lbs of oranges each month. Apples, grapes, and oranges last awhile. We eat the bananas or use them to bake with the rest of the month.

If you shop once a month what are your tips for keeping produce fresh?

Autumn, I don't know where you get your apples, but Farmer's orchard on 36 east is open all yr. now and I just got a half bushel of 2nds for 5.50. They still have lots of apples and many varieties too. check out my blog too www.ohiocountrylife.blogspot.com

as far as milk goes, I use the instructions found on the Backwoods Home Magazine website for canning milk. It's supposed to be "experimental" canning, but it works great for me!
