Homestead Happenings

This last week was a busy week at our homestead. We had our first 4-H meeting of the year. My two oldest are excited...we are blessed with wonderful friends who are letting my son raise broilers at their house and my daughter gets to raise meat rabbits at another friend's home. This will be our first experience with raising animals and spending a week at the fair!!

We will be raising a total of 10 broilers and then another friend is raising another 10 broilers for us. I'm so excited to not have to worry about buying chicken at the grocery store much longer. My two kids in 4-H will be doing a total of four projects.

We are also planning our garden. I'll be ordering our seeds next weekend. I still can't make up my mind what I want to plant....the seed catalogs make everything look good!! We're hoping to grow two types of potatoes, sweet corn, and onions at my parent's farm...we're only planting things that will do well with little help since they're not living there yet.

In our kitchen I'm hoping to get some freezer cooking done. I'm a huge fan of "dump" cooking. I don't have to cook anything ahead with that method. I'm also going to be mixing up some homemade mixes. I'm planning on Tuesday also being the day to make yogurt.

What's happening at your homestead?

Autumn,
What great friends to let you raise broilers! I would love to do that. I am going to see how it goes with the chickens that I am getting here in a few weeks first for eggs and then see if I want to move on to broilers. I am curious to see how this goes for you.

What are you going to do with the rabbits?

I am getting excited for Spring, glad tomorrow is March! I just received my seeds in the mail Friday. Now if we can just get rid of all the snow so I can begin building our coop. I will probably be purchasing our brooder equipment this week. Hoping to also get some de-cluttering done too!

Have a great week.

Autumn,
It sounds like you have quite a start on things. I ordered my seeds from rareseeds.com. They are heirloom seeds so I can collect the seeds in the fall to replant. This way I don't have to buy any more... presumably ever. I have egg layers, but am really wanting to raise some broilers too. Hubby and I have to build a larger coop then I may figure out how many broilers to raise. We are so ready for spring around here. My girls can't stand that they don't get snow days like the public schools do, but I don't mind at all. Keeps us mostly on track that way :)
