I own a cow....

Well, not completely but the kids and I went to a farm today. And guess what?!? We are the proud share holders of a dairy cow! I am now entitled to one gallon of raw milk a week. The kids are loving the milk and have already drank 1/2 gallon. I will be buying more shares as money allows. I would like to eventually be able to get five gallons of raw milk a week. In our home we can go through a gallon of milk in one day so we'll have to ration the milk out but I think it's doable. I've noticed that even the "normal" milk in the stores is creeping up to over $3 a gallon and I think paying what I'm paying for milk isn't too bad.

Have you done anything to help you not depend on the grocery stores today?

Hey, you gotta cow! My friend leases her horse. She charges something like $50 a month and you get one whole day to "own" the horse.

I don't do that as my brother owns horses and I could ride 'em if I wanted to. I just never want to!

What a great idea. I have never heard of that, I might look into it. I wonder if the store bought milk will start to not taste as good? Something I have done to kind of avoid the stores is I make my own cleaners. I wrote about it on my blog. Take a look.

I also buy raw milk at a local dairy farm. It is $10.00 a gallon! I have had to cut back since the economy has affected us in a major way, but fortunately we only go through about a gallon a week.

That's very cool. Gives new meaning to the phrase "Have a cow!" :)

I would love to live in an area with small farms and well-treated livestock for (partial) purchase. I guess they'd call that "sharestocking"? LOL

We are hoping to move into a new place about an hour outside the city by the end of the year. I'm going to keep my eye out for a cow to share when I get there!

I am working to grow a fall/winter garden so that I won't need to go to the store for fresh vegetables.
