Reuse Your Junk!

This year I have really been bitten by the backyard homestead bug and since we rent there is only so much we can do. I wanted to really expand my garden and we were planning on my husband building two square foot garden boxes that we will keep on the patio when I decided to look around for some free material.

After doing some Spring cleaning I two under the bed storage containers minus the lids laying around. I was going to take them to goodwill when it hit me...I could plant in those. Yesterday we planted our lettuce in one tub and this weekend we're going to plant onions in the other.

Yesterday we had a beautiful day so the kids and I were cleaning out our garden/flowerbed when I realized we had a spot at the end of our bed where there is always weeds and we have a lot of bricks in our backyard so we decided to move the bricks to the front and extend our garden/flowerbed by building a square foot box out of bricks right there!! Now we can still have two more square foot boxes and have even more produce!!

Good idea planting in the tubs.

I'm visiting through Frugal Friday. It sounds like you've got a great start on a garden this year. Am I correct in assuming you've read the book "Square Foot Gardening"? It's an old one, from the late 70s/early 80s, I think. Using your tubs sounds like a good idea, I've even grown carrots in containers less than 6" deep (there are lots of varieties of short carrots, even cute little round ones). Don't forget to make a few drainage holes in the tubs, and cover them (on the inside) with a curved piece of broken pottery, so the excess water can drain without taking the soil.

For more small space garden ideas, visit your local library ... our library has dozens of gardening books. I have a huge collection of gardening books, accumulated over the past 35 years or so, and love reading them ... so inspirational! I especially like books that combine gardening and recipes.
